We don’t know that there were three and they weren’t kings. The Bible never says how many “Magi” there were, only “three” gifts were given to Jesus (so some interpret this to mean there must have been three). The wise men have been named as Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, but these names first came from a Greek manuscript 500 years after the birth of Jesus. As Archbishop Williams said in his BBC interview, the Bible only says, “They’re astrologers, wise men, priests from somewhere outside the Roman Empire. That’s all we’re really told so, yes, ‘the three kings with the one from Africa’ — that’s legend; it works quite well as legend.” Oh, and those camels the wise men are always riding? No mention of them in the Bible, either.
